One chilly, rainy day, Mum (Mommy) prepares chicken noodle swirly curl soup for her two children, who savour every mouthful. At the end of the meal, the boy falls asleep at the table, dreaming that his sister’s bowl of soup grows and grows until it transforms into a river. The river of soup collects toys, children and even the dog as it surges through the house. Clinging to a noodle raft, the boy opens the door enabling the tidal wave of soup to carry everyone outside.
Although the ending is a little cliched (it was all a dream), this is still a fun book, and teachers and teach-librarians could enjoy using it as a springboard for children using the ‘what if’ questioning framework for students to create their own stories.
