1) I was fortunate enough to attend the recent launch of Running with Wings, written by Sam Squiers and illustrated by Lara Porter. This gentle story follows the friendship between Frankie and Mimmi, and their mutual love of running. While Frankie has her own challenges, she encourages Mimmi to overcome her nerves by imagining wings on her sneakers. Together they learn what winning is really all about. Lara’s illustrations are absolutely delightful, capturing emotions and connections between the characters effortlessly. It is really refreshing to see diversity in abilities and cultures represented so naturally, and reflective of our society. Congratulations Lara and Sam!
– Nanna’s Ladybird is a heartfelt book by Melanie Hunter, exploring the nature of grief from a child’s perspective. Melanie contrasting the warmth of Peggy’s time spent in the garden with Nanna with the cold wind of change where nothing feels the same. Peggy’s confusion is palpable, as is her sense of loss. The appearance of ladybird is a tangible reminder and symbol of Nanna’s love, helping Peggy and her Mum navigate their grief. This touching story is ultimately one of hope and peace. Thanks, Mel, for such a beautiful story and message.
